Mother's Pinies
Mother loved her flowers
And tended them with care
She really had a green thumb
And chose ones with a flair
Tulips and daffodils in the springtime
Chrysanthemums in the fall
Summer roses were prize-winning
And Mother loved them all
I remember her favorite though
From the time that I was tiny
Peony was the flower's name
We hillbillies pronounced it piny
Mother's pinies were the envy
Of the neighbors in Johnson Bottom
Each fall, she would share the cuttings
And the women were glad they'd got 'em
We always had beautiful bouquets
And our home smelled like perfume
They made the house look brighter
And sat in almost every room
Mother is gone to a wonderful place
A Land richly abundant with flowers
She can sit and look at her pinies
As she whiles away the hours
I raise many kinds of flowers
And have since I've been grown
In addition to all the other blooms
I now grow pinies of my own
