Excitedly they flap and flutter
Inspecting their found prize...
Varieties of tender seeds
Of different shapes and size.
Although they share one common purpose...
The joining of the feast...
I've noticed they have "pecking" order
From greatest to the least.
It seems the Blue Jay hopes his boldness
And size will gain a place.
If other birds attempt a feeding
The Jay will then give chase.
They're loudest and most vocal;
They also land with force.
While other birds more timid
Might plan another course.
Enter the small hummingbird
With their slim and slender beak.
They sample all the trumpet flowers
When feedings at its peak.
Each seems to want all of the nectar
Not willing to give share.
They drive away another bird
That dares to crowd the air.
While this drama is unfolding
Each bird has their own abode.
They each have protective natures,
But seldom it is showed.
Some smaller birds will wait until
The larger has been fed.
They will opt to wait their turn...
In safety there instead.
GOD gives each species special skills
To help them to survive.
Some will have great speed...
Some may quickly dive.
Still others feed on seeds that fell
when jostled from their place.
There's food galore for all to share;
They'll eat every trace.
Activity abounds when feeders
Are filled up to the brim.
The feeding frenzy will continue
Until the daylights dim.
When darkness falls... the feeding stops...
Each bird goes to its nest.
The following morning sunrise
Will once again renew their quest.
This cycle GOD has put in place
Is much like ours you see...
Each day we rise... and find our food,
But not within the tree.
